Nagarahole National Park

Nagarahole National Park is located in Karnataka State in Southern region of India. This park was set up in 1955. The name Nagarahole is blended with 2 Kannada words-'Nagar' meaning snake and 'hole' meaning streams, there are plenty of streams snakes, found in this tropical park. A former hunting reserve for the kings of Mysore, the park was established in 1955 with the prime objective of providing a protective habitat to the wild animals in the region.

Nagarahole Park is quite popular for big cats especially for Royal Bengal Tigers: majestic, mysterious and stealthy. This park is also known as Rajiv Gandhi national Park, and is the part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, one of India’s’ largest park in protected forest area. The wildlife sanctuaries like Mudumalai, Bandipur and Wayanad are situated in the adjacent of the Nagarahole Park. The park is sprawled in series of mountains and valleys in area 640 square kilometers and banked on a river named on the Nagarhole, (Nagara Hole means Serpent River), passes through lush green landscapes and wilderness and finally meets the river Kabini, the largest river in the challenging the forest. In 1974 a huge dam is also built on the river, created a beautiful lake to the south of the park, the Nagarhole park is situated on the side of the dam, this dam is compasses the edge of the Bandipur Tiger Reserve.

Nagarhole National Park forest offers plenty of refreshing vegetation namely: Bamboo, teak, eucalyptus and cassia which covers much of the sanctuary, provides a safe haven for the wildlife. Open grassy swamps known as ‘hadlus ‘are abundantly found in many parts due to high rainfall in the monsoon. The southern tropical, moist mixed deciduous forest occupies the majority of the vegetative cover with dry, deciduous occupying the eastern region of forest .The upper tree canopy is dominated by Terminalia tomentosa along with Tectonia grandis, Dalbergia latifolia, Pterocarpus marsupium, Lagerstroemia lanceolata, Anogeissus latifolia, Adina cordifolia, Boambax malabaricum, Schleichera trijuga, Ficus sp. and others. Kydia calycina, Emblica officinalis, Gmelina arborea etc covers the lower canopy. The entire forest is dominated by weedy shrubs, Lantana and Eupatorium vegetation.

The park is enriched with many species: tigers, elephants, sloth bear, jungle cat, spotted deer, panther, gaur (Indian bison) wild boar, sambhar, civet, four horned antelope, bonnet macaque, black napped hare, pangolin and flying fox. The park is also having plenty of reptiles; crocodiles, Cobras, vipers, python sand several species of lizards are also found here. Among the 250 bird species found here, the prominent ones are the common babbler, bee-eater, bulbul, dove, crested serpent, hornbill, Malabar pied, alexandrine, peacock, woodpecker, warbler, great Indian reed, eagle, crested hawk, golden-back parakeet, and the southern tree pie and may more.

The park official provides mini bus safaris, Jeep safaris and Elephant safari. The prior permission has to be taken from the officials. And joy rides by Elephant around the park for 30 minutes.

Best Time to visit: November to May.

Note: The Park is open round the year. However during the heavy rain in the monsoon and mating season the park will be closed.

Afternoon: 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm

Reach:

By Air: Mysore – 96 kms and Bangalore – 236 kms are the nearest airport to reach Nagarhole. Both the airports are well connected with major cities of India.

By Rail: Located at a distance of 80 kms, Mysore is the nearest railhead to reach Nagarhole.

By Road: Kutta is nearest town at distance of 7 kms. Madikeri: 93 kms, Bangalore: 236 kms, Mysore: 80 kms. Nagarhole National park is well connected with all major towns of the Southern region.
